What's the difference between the two? Isn't it something to do with how much I am willing to pay as opposed to how much the bank or whoever can take!!! I may be wrong. The reason I ask, is that the only Standing Order I have left is to Charltons Valley Gold scheme. The reason behind Valley Gold, was to enable the club to fund the youth setup and as they say unearthing the talents of tomorrow!!!! So how comes none of the talent coming through, is actually up to scratch? Could that be something to do with the players being attracted, the coaching setup/ staff, the facilities, the money being offered to players, or even that it's a complete waste of time, effort and money and we should just throw in the towel. Wouldn't it be easier to buy up the best 17 - 20 year olds in the lower leagues, loan them back out or play them in the reserves for a year. That way we wouldn't have to waist time in scouting youth players, training them, building nice huts for them to change in, or getting the supporters hopes up come FA Youth Cup time. Surely players like James Walker, Myles Weston and Alistair John would be best off somewhere else. Just look at how Lloyd Sam has been treated. These are players who are up their with the best in their age group. But they aren't good enough for Charlton!!!! That makes a hell of a lot of sense, but then again I may have an axe to grind!!!!!
It's quite infuriating when people don't read your emails correctly, or indeed choose not to read what you are saying.
I had mentioned on the Pink Oboe list yesterday the fact that PurpleSprouting JimBob had been coaching the Junior Reds under 8's, but no Charlton scout had been to see any off their Under 8 matches, and that only a handful of players had been signed up for the Charlton Academies Under 9's where as Millwall, Chelsea and West Ham had signed up all the best players from that League into their academies. I had made the point that if you are in the business of setting up an Under 9's team surely you want top have the best players available, whether they turn out to be shite at 11 or too small at 16. You've got to be in it to win it. I was told the facilities for the Charlton Academies were tremendous, they get loads of free kit and that SprinklyBob had that Axe to grind. Well you can't give Cooksley a SS and expect him to bat like Flintoff, or gice Gerry a new set of clubs and expect him to be the new Tiger Woods. But you can give them to an 8 year old who has shown aptitude and try to develop him as a player. Surely the sooner the better. Maybe I'm living a romantic existence? No, maybe I'm a realist.
On another sort of sour note, the club have announced that Tony Christie will be performing his hit ... (Is This The Way To) Amarillo? during the Boro Cup Match in a few weeks. Blimey, you could hear the collective sigh throughout the whole of the South East. Is this really what we should expect, or even want!!!??? Is there a reason behind it? It's all to do with last years end of season draw with the Palarse when Charlton fans were singing it in the Avenues And Alleyways of SE7. However it's now gone beyond a joke and this stunt maybe the straw that will break the camels back. We need to get some reality back into the equation.
